After several speculations and official teasers from the company, OnePlus has finally taken the wraps off the much-awaited successor to the original OnePlus Nord. Dubbed as OnePlus Nord 2 5G is the third smartphone in OnePlus’ budget-oriented Nord series (in India). With Nord 2, OnePlus continued its tradition of revealing the key specifications before launch, so it was little to be known about the device. The term “Flagship Killer” makes a return with the Nord, and it certainly brings some high-end specs to the table for a mid-range price. Without further ado, let’s dive into the details of the device.
OnePlus Nord 2 5G: Features and Specifications
Starting off with the design, OnePlus Nord 2 borrows a lot of design cues from the OnePlus 9 series, specifically the similar resembling rounded rectangle camera module at the back and the hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera. The smartphone features an all-glass body with a plastic frame sandwiched in between. Both the front and back glass is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, and the back has a slight curve on the edges to give a comfortable grip.
On the front, it features a 6.43-inch FHD+ Fluid AMOLED display with a 20:9 aspect ratio, 90Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support. The new Nord will come in three colourways – Gray Sierra with matte back, glossy Haze Blue and India-exclusive Green Woods (comes with lightly textured PU leather finish). The device retains OnePlus’ iconic Alert Slider but skimps out on the 3.5mm headphone jack. The smartphone also features dual stereo speakers
Since its debut, OnePlus has always sticked with Qualcomm chipsets, but with Nord 2, the company has decided to take a detour. The new Nord is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1200 AI SoC, a slightly tweaked version of the standard Dimensity 1200 designed in collaboration between OnePlus and MediaTek. It comes paired with 6GB, 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128B or 256GB of faster UFS 3.1 internal storage.
Thanks to MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI SoC, the new Nord will come with various AI-based features. According to OnePlus, Nord 2 will feature AI Photo Enhancement that can recognise up to 22 different scenarios and automatically adjust colour tones to make the photos look more appealing. For video, it will allow for live HDR effects in real-time during recording.
For optics, Nord 2 features a triple rear camera setup with a 50MP Sony IMX 766 primary camera (the same sensor present on the OnePlus 9 series) with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), an 8MP 119-degree ultra-wide camera and a 2MP monochrome sensor. For selfies, it has a 32MP Sony IMX 615 camera shooter housed in a hole-punch cutout at the top left corner. The camera app boasts features like AI photo enhancement, AI video enhancement, UltraShot HDR, Nightscape Ultra, and Portrait mode.
The phone runs the renowned Oxygen OS (ver. 11.3) based on Android 11 out of the box. Thanks to the recent merger between OnePlus and Oppo, the custom UI is notably based on Oppo’s ColorOS 11.3. As for software updates, OnePlus has promised two years of Android updates and three years of security updates for the Nord 2. OnePlus Nord 2 packs a 4,500mAh dual-cell battery with support for Warp Charge 65 fast charging, which the company claims can juice the phone to 100 per cent in under 30 minutes.
For connectivity, OnePlus Nord 2 includes Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC sensor, USB-C port, and 5G support (sub-6GHz band only). It also comes with an in-display optical fingerprint sensor and an X-axis linear motor (Haptics 2.0) for haptics.
