AMD’s upcoming next-gen desktop GPU might pack a strong punch, over 3X more powerful than its current flagship RX 6900 XT, if the latest rumours are to be believed.

The leaks show that the flagship GPU at the heart of RDNA 3, called Navi 31, will include 2 chiplets with 80 compute units each. According to the leaker, the new GPU will be almost 3 times faster than Navi 21, which the GPU present on AMD’s Radeon RX 6900 XT.

This somewhat lines up with AMD’s plans for RDNA 3 which will adopt a design with multiple chiplets as per a recent patent by the company.

As for machine learning performance, it looks like AMD won’t go the NVIDIA route with dedicated hardware on-chip. Considering how much NVIDIA has increased the value of its products with ML-enabled features like Broadcast and DLSS, it’s hard to see AMD competing without at least some form of ML capability. After all, team red is working hard on bringing their own DLSS competitor called Super Resolution, although their quest in making it cross-platform has significantly delayed its announcement. We’ve already started to see that come to fruition with FidelityFX features now available on Xbox Series consoles.

Of course, we’re not expecting AMD to officially announce the RDNA 3 powered graphics cards until at least next year, so take these ‘leaks’ with a grain of salt. Meanwhile, you might want to check out our review of the Radeon RX 6800 XT, where we were thoroughly impressed with its gen-on-gen improvement, although slightly disappointed with its average ray tracing performance.
