Xiaomi was one of the first companies to patent the technology for under-display cameras back in 2019. If you recall, this was when the entire smartphone industry was scrambling to show off their creative prowess with respect to achieving a full-screen display. Their first prototype left quite a lot to be desired considering the hardware limitation with respect to the camera they could enclose under the display.

Selfies seemed quite dull and lifeless which only strengthened Xiaomi’s resolve to design the best possible implementation of this revolutionary idea! If recent leaks by Chinese site LetsGoDigital are anything to go by, India’s largest smartphone brand has filed a patent with CNIPA (China Intellectual Property Administration) that hints at a possible smartphone with this technology that’s ready for commercial sale.

As excited as this gets us, I’d suggest taking this leak with a pinch of salt. The current economic climate isn’t exactly conducive for the launch of experimental devices. If our guess is right, Xiaomi might showcase this technology to the public in the guise of a new Mi Mix or the Mi 11 in 2021.

The leaked phone shows off tiny bottom bezels and a full-screen notchless display. This patented technology seemingly makes the display transparent when the camera is in use and reverts to its normal state when it isn’t. No other additional details/features could be deciphered from the leaked schematics of the “under display” camera at this time.
