A host of new releases see the light every year but only a few can ever stand at the top. With 2018 come to a close, it’s time to look ahead towards the endless possibilities that lie in wait, some may live up to that potential, others may fall far below it but the excitement generated from the anticipation of a new title is in a way, its own reward.

So, with that out of the way, here’s some of the games that we are stoked to see launch this year and you should be as well:

    Fire Emblem Three Houses

    Fire Emblem Three Houses (Game)

Ever since the release of Awakening back in 2012, Nintendo and Intelligent Systems’ Fire Emblem franchise has gone from niche JRPG featuring that “anime dude” from Super Smash Bros. to a proper flagship title for Nintendo Systems, and from what’s been revealed of Three Houses so far, it looks like the series might be soon welcoming its best entry yet.

From the trailer, players can gleam the return of the fan-favorite ‘avatar’ character though in a, thankfully, more secondary role similar to how it was in Awakening. Other than that, it seems like the game will feature multiple protagonists as well as having the main units in battle command a small battalion of troops with which they can execute special formation attacks. Staying true to core elements while stepping into the future is what made Awakening such a great game and Three House seems to be poised to achieve the same.

    Devil May Cry 5

    Devil May Cry 5 (Game)

While a solid game in it’s own right, most fans of the franchise were nonetheless left disappointed by Ninja Theory’s take on it. The protagonist in that game may have been called Dante, but he most definitely was not and that left fans clamoring for a true sequel to the series. And in 2018, those wishes came true.

Devil May Cry 5 looks to be a fitting return for a series long hailed as one of the best in the hack-n-slash genre. The game will feature Dante and Nero back as playable characters as well as the introduction of a brand new one named “V”. Every trailer so far has been a thrill to watch and the combat showcased contained a good amount of variety in its execution and looked gorgeously slick to boot. Whether the upcoming game will live up to those expectations, remains to be seen but for now it’s something any player should look forward to.

    Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

    Bloodstained (Game)

Castlevania has always been one of the cornerstones of gaming legacy, even having an entire genre named after the series. Unfortunately, it’s most recent entries have strayed quite far from those iconic roots and, unsurprisingly, have been met with a less than stellar reception from fans of the franchise.

However, those hoping for a return to form, have had a ray of light faintly shine for a while now. Castlevania may not ever get a new entry that stays true to the series’ core, courtesy of Konami ofcourse, but the man behind the franchise, Koji Igarashi, and his team have been had at work on the upcoming title, Bloodstained Ritual of the Night, a 2.5D Metroidvania which embodies all the hallmarks of classic Castlevania. This one’s been a long time coming, ever since its Kickstarter back in 2015 and here’s hoping those long years of waiting finally come to fruition in 2019.

    Jump Force

    Jump Force (Upcoming)

This one appeals to a specific audience, but pretty much every single person in that audience is gonna want to take a shot at this title cause Namco Bandai and Spike Chunsoft’s Jump Force is bringing together characters from the past and present of the storied Weekly Shonen Jump magazine for an all-out brawl of epic proportions.

From Dragon Ball, Bleach, Naruto, One Piece and a couple of others, any longtime anime fan will most definitely find something to love in this upcoming flashy 3D fighting game. From iconic landscapes, gorgeous effect work, an original story by Akira Toriyama and a customizable player character, there’s layer after layer of icing on an already scrumptious cake. Jump Force is the closet game to release on this list, making its debut in the second month of 2019 so we don’t really have to wait long at all for the opportunity beat down friends and foes alike with our favorite anime characters.

    Code Vein

    Code Vein (Upcoming)

“Anime Dark Souls”, everything seen of Code Vein so far points to that phrase ringing true. From the team behind the God Eater franchise, Code Vein looks to be a more “hardcore” evolution of the formula established within that series

Taking control of technologically enhanced vampires in a post-apocalyptic world, Code Vein is ready to test some mettle with its fast-paced action packed gameplay and cooperative multiplayer. Throw in a decent story with some anime inspired zaniness and you’ve got yourself one heck of a fun time, which is exactly what Code Vein looks to deliver for fans of genre.

And that’s it for now, check back here in a little while for the second part of our most exciting upcoming games.
