[UPDATE] – The new update is now live, weighing in 18GB on PC (Uplay). You can check out the patch notes here.

    The original story follows.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is set to receive a massive new Yule season update soon which will introduce river raids and new other new features, as well as fix updates. The update was first discovered by PlayStation Game Size, a Twitter account which keeps tracks of new game updates added to the PlayStation database. Soon after, Ubisoft officially revealed that the update is indeed real, and will be dropping sometime soon.

There’s More Than River Raids Coming…

While officially we only know that the update will be focused on adding river raids feature, the PlayStation game size handle also revealed that it will include the following:

    • 3 replayable maps including gear, books of knowledge, silver and runes.
    • A new customizable Jomsviking hall in the Ravensthorpe settlement.

The update will reportedly a beefy one, at over 6+ GB for consoles. Ubisoft has also confirmed that a title update will be coming at/around the same time, so the large size of the update makes sense. It will be released on both last-gen as well as current-gen consoles at the same time, as well as PC. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla made a big amount of changes to its gameplay loop following Odyssey, and chief among them was removing ship combat. Instead, in the game, you can conquer new areas by starting a raid when approaching a harbour with your longship (or even without it). While the raiding mechanic was a welcome addition, it did become repeatedly tiresome when you’re way into the endgame. A new river raid update should add some engaging new content so players keep coming back to the game. Ubisoft has been recently treating their AAA single-player games as live services, with major new content pouring in long after launch, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla marked their biggest ever release.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will also be getting 2 new expansions later this year with Wrath of the Druids and The Siege of Paris, with free content dropping throughout the year. If you haven’t checked out the game yet, you can read our review of the game where we were extremely impressed with how Ubisoft managed to balance the RPG elements with a more lore-friendly narrative. Here’s our verdict on the game:

“Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is one of the best games in the series, striking the perfect balance between the franchise’s newfound RPG gameplay and a focused narrative that pays respects to its predecessors in meaningful ways.”

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is out now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S | X and PC (Uplay and Epic Games Store).
