AMD’s Ryzen 4000 ‘Renoir’ Desktop APUs are here, and with and several benchmark scores are already out. The performance results are points to the AMD Ryzen 7 4700G, which features Vega 8 GPU, being as fast as an entry-level discrete graphics cards. The benchmark results came from Chiphell which features the general and graphics performance capabilities. The forum member Chiphell gained the engineering sample by testing the APU in various performance metrics.

The engineering sample of the AMD Ryzen 7 4700G bears the 100-1000000149 OPN code. Many engineering samples are out already and they have final clock speeds tested. Although, this sample does not feature the final clock speed and works on a 3.0 GHz base frequency and a 4.0 GHz boost-up frequency. The Ryzen 7 4700G and the Ryzen 7 PRO 4750G officially work on 3.6 GHz base frequency and 4.45 GHz boost frequency for comparison. The final models are not standing on the expectations with the silicon that was used by the leaker. However, still, the general and graphics capabilities of the APU steals the show.

The motherboard used was AORUS B550I PRO AX and it featured two 8 GB DDR4 sticks. The leaker did bot mention the specific version but the DDR4 DIMMs were clocked to 4300 MHz. It also featured an Infinity Fabric link speed of 2100 MHz. Although, the FCLK of 2200 MHz (DDR4-4400 MHz) has already shown up in the previous benchmarks. This again tells about the early design nature which is to be featured on the chip. In the previous benchmark results, the AMD Ryzen 7 4700G APU was overclocked to 4.3 GHz which is 300 MHz higher than its standard operating boost-up frequency being 4.0 GHz (single-core).

Coming to the cooling mechanism used, the leaker used a 240mm AIO Liquid Cooler inside an ITX case and he also mentioned the Noctua NH-D15 heatsink with liquid metal thermal paste. Both the cooling mechanisms are used for high-end cooling. Now even for an 8 core, we are not bothered about the coolers. The voltage was pushed to 1.34V to hit the 4.3 GHz boost-up frequency. However, the voltage used cannot be trusted blindly because CPU-z reports the incorrect voltage. The max temperature of 76C across all cores under the stress test was reported by the leaker. The user reported that the Renoir APU gets heated more than the Ryzen 7 3800X 8 Core CPU. The reason for this could be the monolithic design.

If we refer to the scores that appeared in Cinebench R15, the APU managed to score 2079 points in the multi-core test. On the other hand, the APU scored 4789 points in the multi-core tests for Cinebench R20. Even if the chip has a lower clock speed and the engineering state the chip almost matches the performance scores with the Ryzen 7 3800X in Cinebench.

If we compare the APU with the Core i9-9900KF having 5.0 GHz clock speed, the ES Renior APU offered around 5% higher multi-threaded performance. However, the Core i9-9900KF offered 6% better single-core tests.

The leaker gave the scores of the graphics performance test too. He found that the Vega 8 GPU which is featured on the Ryzen 7 4700G is a very capable graphics solution. The ES chip’s GPU has a final 2.1 GHz clock speed but it was running on 1.7 GHz instead. The leaker overclocked the GPU to 2.4 GHz with DDR4 memory at a frequency of 4200 MHz and fixed the issue.

The leaker did not share the screenshots or pictures. Although, some performance results in 3DMark Firestrike were shared by him. The scores of the AMD Ryzen 7 4700G were around 5100 points and around 2700 points in the 3DMark Firestrike performance and 3DMark Firestrike Extreme benchmark respectively. However, the performance must be expected to be higher as the scores are not based on the final silicon drivers.

The lineup has already released and we should expect some more performance scores soon. We expect the performance of these chips to get better with driver updates.

The AMD Vega 8 GPU proves that it is better than Radeon RX 550 & RX460 having higher performance scores in the 3Dmark Firestrike and it has performance scores similar to that of GeForce GTX 950. It’s truly fascinating.
