Square Enix has announced officially that Marvel’s Avengers will indeed get upgraded to PS5 and Xbox Series X. The cost? It’s free! People who buy the game on PS4 or Xbox One will get the upgrade for free with multiple enhancements like a high-performance mode. In the case of Sony’s PS5, the performance mode will target 60 FPS at dynamic 4K resolution.

As noted in the PlayStation blog post, the PS5 version of Avengers will make use of the SSD, offer high fidelity and performance modes, and take advantage of the haptics on the Dualsense controller. However, the thing that we find more interesting is the 4K 60 FPS target in performance mode. That’s quite impressive considering how “performance mode” works on the PS4 Pro right now.

For the uninitiated, most PS4 Pro enhanced games offer 2 modes which either focus on better visuals (generally high resolution like checkerboarded 4K) or better performance (sometimes 60 FPS at 1080p). One thing that most gamers weren’t happy with throughout the generation was the lack of high framerates in AAA titles, with very few exceptions. Examples include God of War, which targeted 60 FPS at 1080p on the performance mode.

This in general is good news for fans everywhere. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X have high-end PC specs, which are targeting 4K 60FPS as a standard, although whether developers will choose that is up for debate. For games like Horizon Forbidden West, Guerrilla might still be targeting 30 FPS, which is a bummer. Marvel’s Avengers is shaping up to go the Destiny route, where online multiplayer will keep the game alive for years after launch. In that case, 60 FPS is certainly the way to go.
