Activision has at last released the remastered version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but not all gamers can access it. The game was launched quite stealthily yesterday on the PlayStation store. Activision has confirmed that the remaster won’t be coming to PC or Xbox for a month, in turn making a lot of fans angry. Like some features of the 2019 MW reboot, Activision has made MW2’s remastered campaign a timed PS4-exclusive.

This move, as it’s clear by now, isn’t being taken well by gamers on other platforms. Exclusives have always been a key part of the console gaming experience, but 3rd party exclusives tend to hurt more than others. At least with first-party exclusives, you get a guarantee of that title being locked to the platform you bought it for, thereby increasing the potential value of the system. Third-party exclusives, however, have always irked fans because of their anti-consumer implications.

Regarding the one-month exclusivity deal with PlayStation, it seems like this deal was struck by Activision around the 2019 Modern Warfare:

Needless to say, a lot of fans, as well as reviewers, have taken to twitter to talk about the situation openly:

We’ve previously talked about how console exclusives can hurt gamers all around, but with first-party titles it makes sense. When you purchase an Xbox console, you’re guaranteed to get Halo games exclusively there. Similarly, with the PS4 Sony basically won this generation’s console wars, and its sales records are a testament to the fact that exclusives sell hardware. In fact, even Sony has started to open up its ecosystem a little more. However, with the remaster of a classic game like Modern Warfare 2, you’d expect it to be available to players on all platforms.

At least the multiplayer maps will be available to everyone.

“Beginning with Modern Warfare last year, the focus has been to bring players together seamlessly in one unified online multiplayer playground. With cross-play, releasing new post-launch maps, modes, weapons and more content drops for free, and launching Warzone, the Free-to-Play, Free-for-Everyone new Call of Duty experience, the Modern Warfare universe will expand, bringing new experiences to players.” -Activision blog

You can purchase the game for PS4 here. Modern Warfare 2 remastered will be available for PC and Xbox One consoles on April 30th, 2020.
