Netflix dropped the first trailer for the highly anticipated Punisher yesterday, and it has already garnered a lot of interest. After the critical acclaim that the character got in Daredevil, it seemed inevitable that Netflix would push for a spin-off focusing on the character.
The series is created by Steve Lightfoot and produced by Marvel Television and ABC Studios for Netflix, based on the character that appears in the Marvel universe. What makes this version interesting is that the character finally has been integrated to the larger MCU in general, having already made his debut in the second season of Daredevil.
The trailer is intriguing, straightforward, and appears very dark. Frank Castle a.k.a the Punisher, is a person who is out to avenge the death of his wife and children, and is determined to fight crime by all means. He is ready to kill, and he does kill. Jon Bernthal returns as the titular anti-hero, reprising his role from Daredevil. His portrayal of the character as an angry, tortured father and husband living in his own world full of darkness looks refreshing. The takeaway here is that the Punisher isn’t a superhero. In fact, he is more of an anti hero as his methods of achieving justice are questionable. Ebon Moss-Bachrach stars as David Lieberman/Micro, a former NSA analyst who helps out Castle, along with Deborah Ann Woll returning as Karen Page from Marvel’s other netflix outings.
The footage revealed looks exciting, and though there is bloodshed in generous amounts, it manages to hold the viewers’ attention till the very last second. The surprise background score (Metallica’s One) somehow manages to make the trailer more brutal and interesting than a lot of what Marvel has offered in the past, clearly demonstrating just how edgy the series is going to be.
The exact dates haven’t been announced yet, but the series will premier later in 2017. We’ll keep you updated as more is revealed.
