Sony’s lead system architect, Mark Cerny in an interview with Wired a short while back shared a lot about the upcoming PS5 console and what to expect in terms of hardware. This included the octa-core Zen2 CPU, Navi GPU with possible ray tracing support as well as the shift to SSDs from traditional magnetic storage. However, according to tech journalist Ainsley Bowden, who claims to have an inside scoop from reputable sources, the Xbox “Anaconda” will be even more advanced than Sony’s PS5.

    Sony PS5 vs Xbox

Bowden complimented the PS5’s specs on Twitter, but went on to say that, “Multiple insiders have now confirmed it’s true Xbox “Anaconda” will be more advanced as rumored”. And I believe he’s right. Microsoft may not have the exclusives to challenge Sony (just yet), but as far as the hardware goes, they will probably have the upper hand this time around. MS is expected to launch two variants of the upcoming Xbox console, namely Lockhart, the successor to the present-gen Xbox One and Anaconda, the next iteration of the Xbox One X.

There’s one thing that’s important to remember. Sony might have given us a basic picture of what to expect from the next PS5, but there were no solid figures in the interview. Yes, there will be 8 Zen2 cores, and we do know they’ll be significantly more powerful than Jaguar, but the exact performance is still not known. The Vega GPU, on the other hand, is a complete mystery, and what sort of ray tracing support will it have is also not clear. Lastly, the storage will comprise of an SSD, most likely an NVMe based drive, but once again none of the technical details have been shared.

Right now, it’s just speculation and rumors. AMD is slated to reveal its Ryzen 3000 CPUs and Navi GPUs in the coming months, so things ought to get more transparent soon enough. We’ll keep you updated on this. Cheers!
