AMD has started to prep its 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper CPUs for launch, with a rumored launch date of 5th November (Source: Videocardz). There are multiple Threadrippers based on the 7nm Zen 2 architecture slated for launch, from 16 core parts to all the way up to 48 core variants. The HEDT flagship is set to launch next year with as many as 64 cores.
Compared to the preceding 2nd Gen, these TRs will pack more cores, a higher IPC as well as higher boost clocks. This should result in healthy gains both with respect to single-threaded and multi-threaded workloads. The new HEDT lineup is also supposed to come with a new socket (TRX40), and possibly a separate one for the higher-end variants.
There will be two kinds of Threadrippers in the 3rd Gen: Enthusiast and Workstation. The former will be aimed at folks into gaming as well as content creation while the latter will focus on sheer professional workloads such as a small-scale server. These HEDT parts will be launched alongside the 16 core Ryzen 9 3950X which will be the new Matisse flagship.
Meanwhile, Intel’s Cascade Lake-X processors have reportedly been delayed until late November. Last month, the company had announced that it was launching its next-gen Extreme Edition lineup for content creators and enthusiasts at half the price compared to Skylake-X, offering performance at the same price as the 2nd Gen Threadrippers. It seems like Intel is waiting for red team to make a move and will accordingly respond. We’ll let you know when we hear more about the 3rd Gen Threadrippers.
