After a few weeks of teasing the smartphone, ZTE today unveiled the world’s first under the display camera smartphone — ZTE Axon 20 5G. While the leading brands like Xiaomi and Oppo have just showcased what they have worked on, ZTE has claimed the bragging rights of releasing a truly bezel-less smartphone.

Let’s get done with the specifications first, and then we’ll move on to the talk of the town. Axon 20 5G is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset with 6GB or 8GB RAM and 128/256GB memory. Coupled with a 4,220 mAh battery and 30W fast charging, the smartphone should last you a full day. The phone’s running Android 10 with ZTE’s Mifavor 10.5 skin on top of it. The phone also features an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The back has a quad-camera setup featuring a 64MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 2MP depth sensor and a 2MP Macro lens (don’t really know why companies are bundling this). ZTE says that the smartphone was carefully crafted with 36 different processes to create a unique, good-looking 3D glass on the back. Surprisingly, the phone doesn’t have a dedicated earpiece on the top-front.

You won’t notice the front camera while using the phone

The smartphone has a 6.92-inch Full HD+ 90Hz OLED display in the front, and when I say Full, I literally mean it. This is a one-of-a-kind smartphone where the OEM hasn’t had to deal with any workaround for the front camera. It’s embedded in the display, and you won’t even notice it when you’re not using the Camera app.

5-Core Process for Achieving Under Display Camera

ZTE Axon 20 5G has front camera embedded in the middle of front-screen

To achieve this feat of technology, ZTE developed a five core process to make the ZTE Axon 20 5G’s under-display camera a reality. One of the main problems with the camera being under the screen is that a very little amount of light reaches the sensor, which results in dark images.

The first step of this ‘special’ process is to coat the display with a film made of a combination of organic and inorganic substances, that allows more light to reach the sensor. It’s got a special dual-control chip and a dedicated driver circuit that helps in maintaining the ‘proper’ colour of the images.

ZTE optimized the consistency of the display pixels with a special matrix, which helps in maintaining the sharpness the lux (light intensity) of the images. ZTE also incorporated a special algorithm in its camera app that works in coordination with the display to improve photo clarity. This ML algorithm assesses the lighting conditions and improves the contrast of the images.

Although ZTE has not showcased any images taken from the front camera, it wants us to believe that the images taken from this sensor will be ‘indistinguishable’ from the normal one.

ZTE Axon 20 5G will be available in four different colours — black, white, purple and orange. It’s China-exclusive for now, and we don’t expect it to come to India. You’ll have to import it if you really want to go hands-on with this device.

The device will start shipping on September 10th and the base variant (6GB/128GB) starts at a pretty low price of ¥2,198 ($322). This is really good pricing considering its world’s first smartphone to have an under-display camera. The middle variant (8GB/128GB) will cost you ¥2,498 ($366) and the top-of-the-tier (8GB/256GB) version will retail for a price of ¥2,798 ($410).
