Since the inception of Warner Bros. DC cinematic universe, Zack Syder being hired as the chief architect for fueling his vision on screen has been met with controversy. While Man of Steel managed to get mediocre reviews, his latest attempt, that is Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, wasn’t very well received.

This prompted him and the studio to make course corrections and change the style of the upcoming Justice League to suit audience’s needs. The movie has hit many pit stops along its long development window and now again, history repeats itself.

Zack Snyder, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, has announced his departure from the project. This decision comes following the news of his daughter Autumn’s tragic death back in March, which was the result of her committing suicide. While he and his family had tried to keep the news to themselves, they have finally decided to release this information to the public as it becomes harder and harder for them to not address it.

Snyder, in his statement said : “In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was way through it, The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all consuming. And in the last two months, I’ve come to the realization …I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”

He adds :

“Here’s the thing, I never planned to make this public, I thought it would just be in the family, a private matter, our private sorrow that we would deal with. When it became obvious that I need to take a break, I knew there would be narratives created on the internet. They’ll do what they do. The truth it…I’m past caring about that kind of thing now.” He continues on to share his new perspective. “I want the movie to be amazing and I’m a fan, but that all pales pretty quickly in comparison. I know the fans are going to be worried about the movie but there are seven other kids that need me. In the end, it’s just a movie. It’s a great movie. But it’s just a movie.”

While the movie had completed principle photography long ago and is currently under post production, there were still some reshoots to take place so as to make way for some new scenes that Syder had penned along with the help of Joss Whedon, who was recently announced as the director for a Batgirl film adaptation, seemingly taking place in the DCEU. Now, it has been revealed that Joss Whedon will take the reigns from Snyder to complete those reshoots while also looking over the rest of the post production.

Whedon, on more than one occasion, has shown his penchant for working on properties revolving around a large ensemble cast. His works include the TV shows Buffy The Vampire SlayerFirefly, its subsequent movie continuation Serenity, and of course, his mammoth projects like The Avengers and its sequel, Age of Ultron. For those of you who are worried about how this might affect the quality of the finished film, as both directors have very different film-making styles, fear not as Warner Bros. president Toby Emmerich said the following while commenting upon the topic : “The directing is minimal and it has to adhere to the style and tone and the template that Zack set. We’re not introducing any new characters. It’s the same characters in some new scenes. He’s handing a baton to Joss but the course has really been set by Zack. I still believe that despite this tragedy, we’ll still end up with a great movie.”

While this is sad news for us all, we do hope that Synder and his family make it through this tough period of time and our best goes to Joss Whedon to make sure that Zack’s vision stays alive.
