YouTube Music Rolls Out Lyrics For Now Playing Screen

Google announced in its latest quarterly earnings call that YouTube Premium and Music has 20 million paying subscribers. In addition to that, they also said that they will be rolling out built-in lyrics for Android and iOS devices.

YouTube Music users can now read lyrics while listening to a song on the service’s iOS and Android apps. To access the lyrics, just click on the information icon on the left side of a song name. This will cause a panel to slide up that notes the view and like count along with shortcuts to the artist and album page.

Now, in addition to these features, there is a new “Lyrics” section underneath. This area has text displayed in white against the themed background that is based on the album cover art. Additionally, scrolling to the very bottom reveals the source of the lyrics, via Google.

Some music videos feature lyrics while those that do not have them, Google displays that too. It’s a very handy thing and a simple feature for YouTube Music to add. However, it saves people the time to separately search for lyrics on Google.

Lyrics are not a feature new to music streaming services. Apple Music and Spotify can also show lyrics while playing a song. Along with this, these apps have real-time lyrics scrolling, i.e., the lyrics advance as the song is being played – on its own. However, this feature isn’t available on YouTube Music as of yet – the lyrics are static. Thus, they have to be forwarded manually.

However, apparently not every song has its lyrics posted yet. YouTube did mention in this scenario that it gets updated lyrics from LyricFind on a daily basis. Yet, the company did not share a timeline as to how long it would take to sync lyrics for particular songs.

Notably, lyrics aren’t available for the web version of YouTube Music. However, the company said that the feature will be available soon.
