The Galaxy S9 is the successor to last year’s well received S8 and is to be launched on February 25. As is tradition, the device and its Plus counterpart has been leaked in all it’s glory. Let’s take a look at what we know of these devices so far.
Courtesy of Evan Blass (@evleaks on Twitter) we knew exactly what to expect of the S9 duo. The front remains the same and the back has the small fingerprint sensor moved to a slightly better position, under the camera. This is way more ergonomic than the previous position. The larger S9 Plus will have a vertical dual camera set up too.
Like last year, Samsung will have the best Snapdragon SoC on their devices in certain regions and their Exynos SoC in other parts of the world. The 845 is likely to come in the USA and the Exynos 9810 elsewhere. This time around, both variants are rumoured to come equipped with 6GB of RAM too. This may or may not be true as an initial benchmark showed a S9 with 4GB of RAM.
Both the devices will come with a tall display with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and a resolution of 2960x1440p. The sizes are unlikely to change with the smaller staying at 5.8″ and the larger at 6.2″. The bezels however seem to be reduced in some leaked images but in others, they look bigger. We’ll have to wait for the final launch to confirm this. Another feature that Could be seen on the S9 duo is a glass coating which resists fingerprints, reduces glare and could cause water to bounce off the screen. This hasn’t been linked to the S9’s exclusively, but Samsung has the tech licensed and plans to use it on future smartphones.
The S9 will sport a 12MP shooter while the S9 Plus will have a dual array of 12MP sensors with OIS and laser and dual pixel auto-focus enabled on both lenses. The larger one will have one lens with variable aperture from f/1.5 to f/2.4 while the other lens wll be fixed at f/2.4. It will also be able to shoot 960 fps slow-mo. The front facing camera is rumoured to be a 8MP sensor with f/1.7 with auto-focus. It is also very likely that there will be Animoji like features and 3D facial recognition along with improved Iris recognition.
5. Other Features
Some other interesting news about the S9 is that it may have stereo speakers by AKG. This set-up may be facilitated by having the earpiece play sound with the main speaker like the iPhones from 7 onwards. The S9 may come with “Intelligent Scan Biometrics” – a combination of facial recognition and Iris recognition to unlock the phone faster a more securely. The renders also suggest that Samsung hasn’t killed the headphone jack yet. There also has been speculation that the phones may come with an in-built pollution scanner after Samsung filed a patent for it recently. This is unlikely but it sure would be very unique if it were to come out. The DeX is also getting a redesign and will now be a pad instead of a dock apparently.
This is what we know about the Galaxy S9. Does it sound interesting enough to warrant an upgrade from the previous generation? Let us know in the comments below!
