The PC port of the popular JRPG, Trails of Cold Steel dropped on Steam and GOG a while back. This is the 8th game in the Legend of Heroes franchise. The Liberl arc, also know as the Trails in the Sky/Sora no Kiseki has already been translated and ported by XSEED in the last couple of years. So it’s only fair that the current arc gets the same treatment.

I had heard that Peter Durante was the lead programmer for the project, so I was expecting a decent port. However, what I saw when I started the launcher took me by surprise. We PC gamers are used to crappy ports when it comes to JRPGs, all thanks to Square Enix and the lack of experience of Eastern Developers with the PC platform. This port is simply in one word perfect, and I’m fairly certain that its all thanks to Durante. Peter Durante is a known modder in the PC gaming space. He has implemented numerous fixes and optimizations in many AAA games over the years, so he’s well know for his skill.

But let me get into the juicy details, before you start judging me. Now, the launcher lets you change each and every graphics option, from Anti-Aliasing to Ambient Occlusion, FOV, Shadow Resolution, Transparency AA, pretty much everything, plus they have also included NVIDIA’s advanced AO algorithm HBAO+. But thats not it, there is an explanation of each option on the side with images, comparing the various levels of the effect/option. Now, I have got to say. I really am impressed. Nier Automata and most recent JRPGs don’t let you tweak the graphics options, it’s mostly just resolution and window size, along the texture size and the graphics preset. Square Enix and other AAA devs ought to learn from this, but… I’m fairly certain they won’t. Well, with that said have a look at these 4K pics I took while playing this awesome game. Can’t wait for the sequel to be ported.
