Sword Art Online Re: Hollow Fragment features an original story based on the hit anime, set in the simulated Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (VRMMORPG) world known as Sword Art Online. In Sword Art Online Re: Hollow Fragment, players will play as the main character, Kirito, and fight through all the levels of Aincrad to break free from being locked within the virtual game world.

It is an RPG which plays like a faux MMORPG, similar to the .hack series. The original also included a limited multiplayer component as well as a number of dating sim elements.

The title has currently sold more than 450,000 copies worldwide though its critical reception is more of a mixed bag. Famitsu, one of the most prominent game magazines in Japan, gave the game a score of 32/40, a fairly positive reception. However western reception was a bit harsher. IGN gave the game a 5.5 out of 10, citing that its excellent combat system is marred by a juvenile romance system and horrible translation. Destructoid gave it a 7/10, saying that it’s a solid and fun experience, though it may lack replay value. It also received a 5.5 out of 10 from PlayStation Universe which called it enjoyable only for hardcore fans. It currently sits at a 65% on Metacritic.
