Summing Up CarryMinati’s YouTube vs TikTok Controversy

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past few weeks, I’m sure you’ve heard of the YouTube vs TikTok controversy. If you haven’t, well, this article is probably for you.

Let’s probably first talk about the main ‘players’ in this battle. We have CarryMinati i.e., Ajey Nagar on the YouTube front, while TikTok has Amir Siddiqui. It all started with Amir uploading a video bashing YouTube and saying that YouTubers are copying their content. This made Nagar create a video roasting every single line of that video to smithereens. No seriously, he took almost every line, bit by bit, and roasted it.

The video, titled ‘YouTube vs TikTok – The End’ blew up. It broke a lot of records in the Indian YouTube scene. I’ll list them:

  • Crossed 1M likes (2hours)
  • Crossed 2M likes (5 hours)
  • And Crossed 5M likes (22 hours)
  • The video to have the most likes in the first 24 hours – 5.2M
  • The second video to have the most likes in the first 24 hours – 5.2M
  • Up until 13 May, it had the greatest number of likes – 10M+
  • Had the greatest number of comments in Indian YouTube – 823K
  • Had the greatest number of comments in the first 24 hours – 461K
  • CarryMinati’s channel gained the greatest number of subscribers in 24 hours – 1.3M
  • Total number of views – 70M+

All was well in CarryMinati’s YouTube life until one fine day the video platform decided to take the video down. News soon spread on Twitter and CarryMinati started to trend on the platform. Out of the 20 Trending topics that one can see, a minimum of five were always present at any given time. And not just for a day – for multiple days. The hashtags included, #JusticeForCarryMinati and #JusticeForCarry. The ‘Carry Army’, as his supporters are apparently called, started to rain down their anger and frustration on TikTok.

This resulted in people downvoting TikTok on Google Play Store. Its rating plummeted from 4.5 stars on 16 May to just 1.2 stars on 21 May. People also started to dig into the history of famous TikTok stars, which resulted in the unearthing of a video by Amir Siddiqui’s brother depicting an acid attack. Other videos also surfaced, including some depicting rape, vulgarity, love jihad and animal abuse in a favourable light. People complained to the National Commission for Women (NCW), the Siddiqui brothers were banned from the platform, and it was a mess all around. Although, well, CarryMinati’s fans were quite pleased.

Then started the cyber bullying, targeted harassment of creators, rape and murder threats – the whole dozen. People started taking this as a personal vendetta. I think that mostly happened because people were unsure as to why the video got taken down and a lack of clarification from Nagar’s side.

That, however, came soon after. Nagar posted in his CarryMinati YouTube, Instagram and Twitter handles about why the video got taken down and that it probably won’t be coming back. And also expressing disappointment on the way his video was misinterpreted by people.

So, why was the video taken down? To sum it up, a lot of people had reported the video since they thought that it was homophobic. Owing to the mass reporting, YouTube had no choice but to take it down. However, the video being taken down made ‘YouTube vs TikTok – The End’ and CarryMinati even more popular.

Now, as of 27 May 2020, CarryMinati posted on all of his social media handles a video titled Yalgaar. The video came out on 24 May and in three days has garnered 20M views and 4.1M likes. It quickly sums up what happened with the ‘YouTube vs TikTok – The End’ video, followed by a video of Nagar talking to his fans regarding the following 12 hours after the deletion, and ends with a line – “Carry roast karega.” The less than 2-minute-long video is trending at #1 on YouTube right now. Fans are super excited for what’s to come and rightly so.

The YouTube vs TikTok debate has divided people into two sections. You are either on this side or that. With people staying at home, locked in due to the quarantine, the debacle has created quite the controversy. Fans are thus waiting expecting CarryMinati’s reply to the deletion, since he has not specified what kind of video Yalgaar is supposed to be.

Time to wait!
