Sony is reportedly developing a remake of The Last of Us for PS5, with Naughty Dog overseeing the project.
The report, coming from Bloomberg, shows that the idea for the remake was conceived by the smaller Visual Arts Service Group, but Sony moved the project back to franchise creator Naughty Dog. The smaller group has since been disbanded, the report claims. The idea for the remake was being moved around during the development for The Last of Us Part 2, so Sony could potentially sell both games in a combo edition for PS5.
Naughty Dog’s last game was a sequel to the first game, which broke massive sales records despite the toxicity around its reviews. The first game, which released on PS3 and got a remaster for PS4, could benefit well from a remake from the ground-up. The game still has a massive fan base, with some even managing to run it pretty well on PCs via emulation.
Sony is clearly not done with The Last of Us franchise, with the upcoming multiplayer ‘Factions’ game as well as an HBO show in development. With a new remake of the classic game, it might be a great way to generate more interest in the franchise from new players, especially as Naughty Dog isn’t working on a third entry just yet.
The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part 2 are now available to play on PS4 and PS5 via backwards compatibility.
