Roku users were in for a terrible surprise when the set-top box maker announced abruptly that it would be pulling Fox’s apps off the platform just ahead of the Super Bowl game. However, the two seem to have struck a deal and it won’t be happening.
For those who are uninformed, Roku or Roku players are a series of online media players manufactured by Roku, Inc., an American company. Roku players provide over-the-top media services as channels.
Roku and Fox announced that they have reached an agreement that will ensure that all of Fox’s app keep on working uninterrupted. The apps will also be restored to the Roku app store ahead of the game.
By the way, the Roku icon is also back on Fox’s Super Bowl landing page. So, the agreement is hopefully going to be long-lasting.
To give it a little backstory, the entire standoff was a heated carriage dispute happening in public – each side was hoping that its customers would get angry enough at the other party to convince them to stand down. Roku, on one hand, tried to tell its customers to watch the game through other apps like NFL, Fubo TV, Sling TV, and Xfinity while Fox, on the other hand, got Fox News hosts like Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham to provoke their audiences directly. Angry owners were also threatening to ditch Roku.
However, no one is sure who actually started the fight. While each side was blaming the other for pulling the channels down originally – they have not shared any proof to back their stories. They also have not shared any details of the new agreement, but it is just a matter of time before the internet gets a whiff of it.
Nevertheless, the situation seems kind of similar to a tactic reported by Bloomberg that the company uses to get a larger cut of the ad sales by threatening to cancel a channel. Sounds quite fishy, honestly.
