    The remake of Resident Evil 3 is finally here and with that, let’s get into how the updated RE Engine performs. We’ve tested the game on a variety of PC systems (and look forward to testing the PS4 version). You can read our full review of the game, but right now let’s get down to how the game plays.

    AMD sent us an early code (it’s a partnered title after all) so we could test it out ourselves. We’ll be including both Intel and AMD based systems for testing the game, with MSI afterburner being used for benchmarking.

    As you can see, we’ve gone with both Intel and AMD based systems. Right off the bat, you may notice that we’re using an older Intel CPU with NVIDIA’s former champion – the GTX 1080 Ti. While this isn’t a pairing we’d suggest for anything like content creation, for gaming it will do just fine. Quad-core chips are still decent with modern AAA titles, and with Resident Evil 3 remake being as optimized as it is (more on that below), it really comes down to the GPU being used.

    For the game’s settings, we want to push the GPUs to their max. We used the highest preset, with the textures pushed as far as the card could handle, as that rarely ever affects performance. The game can easily use above 10 GB of VRAM buffer if your card allows it. Here are the settings we used. Note that Texture quality was increased on the 1080 Ti and decreased on the RX 5600 XT as they both have different VRAM configurations. But that doesn’t affect performance by any wide margin, especially with the optimization done here by Capcom as you’ll see below.

    Benchmark Results – AMD vs NVIDIA

    Here we go! We first started off with the game set at 1080p. All the cards performed really well here, partly thanks to the optimization as well as improvements made in GPU architecture. The 1080 Ti, is a card made for 4K gaming and hence breezed past everything here. The RTX 2060 Super also did well, considering it’s mostly made for 1440p gaming. The RX 5600 XT though was quite surprising. Resident Evil 3 is an AMD partnered title, so it’s not much of a surprise to see those cards performing better than expected.

    Pretty interesting isn’t it? The 5600 XT did really well against the NVIDIA card. The difference between them really isn’t noticeable considering most PC gamers will be playing with 60 or 144Hz monitors. So far AMD’s really delivering on their promise with the RX 5600 XT, and then some! Going by these numbers, the 5600 XT will beat the RTX 2060 by quite a margin.

    At 4K, things got a little tense. Of course, the 1080 Ti did just fine, but the RTX 2060 was surprisingly really good. If you’re willing to turn down a couple of settings then you’re going to get a nice 4K 60 FPS experience on the 2060 Super. Not bad for a card meant for 1440p primarily. Color me surprised! The AMD card also performs better than expected, especially for a GPU meant for 1080p gamers.

    The RX 5600 XT also performed admirably, closing in on the 2060 Super to be clear. AMD’s optimization really shines here.

    • AMD’s FidelityFX CAS – It’s great. I hadn’t personally tested AMD’s open-source Contrast Adaptive Sharpening on any game before, but the temporal anti-aliasing used here works really well. There are some performance dips when using it, but it really doesn’t matter when you’re playing above 100 FPS. The same goes for 4K with a higher-end card like the 1080 Ti. At 4K, CAS didn’t make any difference in framerates on the 1080 Ti, so it kinda comes down to personal preference if you want it turned ON or OFF.

    Our recommendation? Turn CAS ON if you’re playing at 1080p or 1440p. At 4K it’s really down to personal preference. Here’s a couple of screenshots showing the game with CAS turned OFF and ON:

    Testing the game on a standard PS4, we found that the game targets 60fps but generally will hover below that. Hopefully, an update can fix this, as otherwise, it can become a very unbalanced experience.

    Verdict – Impressive Work

    Resident Evil 3 Remake is a very well optimized game, at least on PC. The console ports, however, may need some more work. With it being an AMD partnered title, it performs better than expected on team red’s cards. However, with the optimization being as good here, it performs better than most AAA games across the board right now. I’m guessing level design here really takes the cake, as the game is segmented off with different, limited open areas to explore. Overall, I’m really impressed with the work Capcom has done here.
