Reliance Industries Annual General Meeting threw up some surprising announcements from Mukesh Ambani led telecom giant Reliance Jio, including support from two of the biggest social media platforms in the world, Whatsapp and YouTube, a new phone titled ‘Jio Phone 2’ and a brand new broadband service called JioGigaFiber. Over the past 2 years, Reliance Jio has grown in India at an exponential rate, with over 200 million subscribers, and its showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

The main piece of technology everybody is curious about is the broadband service called JioGigaFiber, an optical based service that will extend connectivity to over 1,000 cities. The broadband will come with a set top box for TV sets that will feature voice control and smart technology. Mukesh Ambani and his company claim that JioGigaFiber is one of the most advanced fibre based services, and it can provide speeds up to 1 Gbps. The service is based on Fiber to the Home (FTTH) technology, which is expected to disrupt the segment of home broadband services now.

Reliance will most likely be offering combos for the service, perhaps a combo of fast broadband connectivity with huge dollops of free data thrown in. After all, the business model with mobile networks on similar lines is doing wonders for the company, so it doesn’t come as a massive surprise that this may be their plan for this service.

The Jio GigaFiber is proclaimed to be a solution that takes care of more than just broadband connections, but also provides its users with IPTV, landline, video conferencing, virtual reality gaming, and much more. Its compatibility with television sets will be ensured with the help of GigaTV set-top boxes and other smart home devices. Those with GigaTVs, in addition to the normal features, will also be able to make phone calls to other TVs, phones and tablets on Jio GigaFiber networks.

Anybody who is interested in availing of the service can register for the Jio GigaFiber from August 15 via MyJio or Jio.com. The company will prioritise the rollout of the Jio GigaFiber service in localities based on interest from registrations.
