Origin EON17-X is claimed to be a “desktop replacement”. This big, aggressive looking laptop tries to achieve that by using the best possible hardware available. An Intel i7 processor and a Geforce GTX 1080 comes to mind when someone says best possible. On top of this, Origin also overclocks the already powerful GeForce GTX 1080 and the Intel Core i7-8700K processor present in this laptop. Now you may have noticed, the i7-8700K is a desktop processor, and yes, EON17-X does have a desktop processor underneath. And that too the fastest desktop processor available. The processor has 6 cores and 12 thread and basically is too good for the competition. The EON17-X destroys the CPU benchmarks and shines through triple-A titles without a hiccup.

The laptop really makes a case for being the “desktop replacement” on paper. Let’s look at the various aspects and features of the laptop.

Every part of this system is high-end and made to perform, but the CPU still stands out of the bunch. The reason behind that is that most of the high-end gaming laptops comes with Intel’s Core i7-7700HQ which is a quad-core, 8-thread chip that can reach clock speeds of up to 3.8GHz on turbo and is designed for laptops. Whereas the EON17-X ups the game with a proper desktop level processor, the Core i7-8700K. The i7-8700K is Intel’s current mainstream flagship chip. It packs in 6 cores and 12 threads with clock speeds ranging from 3.7GHz to an amazing 4.7GHz. And then on top of that, Origin applies a factory overclock on it.

This processor, paired with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 makes sure that this laptop will perform no matter what you throw at it. This powerful pair is used on a 120Hz 2560x1440p matte display. It’s a beautiful display which is further boosted by Nvidia’s G-Sync technology that eliminates stuttering and tearing by synchronizing the refresh rate of the display and the GPU. With that power, this machine will run the latest games at high frame rates. It can handle the older games without even breaking a sweat, even at high graphic settings.

For a laptop this powerful, when you are playing your favorite game on it or maybe watching your favorite movie, if it doesn’t sound as good as it performs, it leaves you a bit disappointed. And sadly, that’s the case with many laptops nowadays. Fortunately, it won’t be the case if you are using the EON17-X. This notebook includes a dedicated subwoofer to take care of the sound department. It’s paired with Creative’s customizable Sound Blaster Connect 2 software and delivers a booming, crisp and clear sound, enough to liven up your music, games and movies without the requirement of external speakers.

The EON17-X can configured to have up to 64GB of RAM at different clock speeds. There are several storage combinations available on Origin PC website, so it’s totally up to one’s needs. There are a lot of options from different companies to choose from.

Design

Loading such powerful hardware into a laptop was always bound to make it heavy. Unsurprisingly, the notebook is enormous with a thickness of 1.6 inches and a weight of 8.6 pounds. There are 3 colors to choose from for the lid of the laptop, Red, Black and White along with a more premium Hydro-Dip which costs an extra $249. You can also have a custom paint job done by professionals. Middle of the lid is the Origin’s circular logo and a small brushed aluminium section at the base.

The keyboard deck and bottom of the laptop are made of black plastic. Speaker grills are present underneath the lid and deliver great sound as mentioned earlier. The keyboard is backlit and split into four zones. The keyboard is not a mechanical one but is still great for gaming. The touchpad has a fingerprint reader built into its upper-left corner.

In the end, we can conclude that Origin PC, with the EON17-X has tried to deliver an all-rounder by putting in killer specs and actual desktop level components. And to be honest, they may have achieved it. Although not cheap in any way, the price you pay is totally justified for this beast. That desktop-level 12 thread processor really puts this laptop in a league of its own and sweep aside the competition.
