Nintendo has just announced that the Switch has become the fastest selling home video game system of all time in the United States, surpassing the previous record holder which was the Nintendo Wii.

Since its launch back on March 3rd, 2017, the Switch has sold over 4.8 million units in its first 10 months on sale according to Nintendo’s internal sales figures. That’s the highest number that any home console has managed to achieve to date in 10 months with the closest contender being the Nintendo Wii which managed to sell an impressive 4 million units within the same time frame.

A quote from Nintendo of America’s President and COO, Reggie Fils-Aimé:

“Fans across the country have experienced the joy of playing their favorite games at home or on the go. Now that many more people have received Nintendo Switch systems for the holidays, we look forward to bringing them fun new surprises in 2018 and beyond.”

The success of the Switch can be attributed to a very strong library of games released within its first year on the market such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which is currently owned by more than 55% of Switch users. Other popular titles include Super Mario Odyssey which boasts an attach rate over 60%, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with over 50% and Splatoon 2 with over 20%.

As the Switch enters its second year, Nintendo has promised a wealth of new titles that will soon grace the system such as Kirby Star Allies, Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2 and a new game starring Yoshi. Fans can also expect continued support from major publishers like Ubisoft, Activision, EA, Capcom, Sega, Take 2 and Bethesda along with many new titles from indie developers.

As of the 12th of December, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 10 million units worldwide.
