Netflix Provides a Free Movie in Lieu of Subscriptions For Sequel

Netflix, it seems, thinks that its original content can get people to subscribe to its services. So, through March 9th, the streaming giant is giving To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before for free to US citizens in hopes that the sequel can rope in new subscribers. Previously, Netflix had used this strategy in the UK (The Crown) and in India, Mexico and Colombia as well with regional shows.

Netflix gives a lot of priority to its US audience, although the growth has slowed significantly. In its latest earnings call, the company had apparently added only 550,000 subscribes in the US and Canada last quarter. This might be because of its price hike last year. It further added that it will probably add fewer subscribers in the first quarter of 2020 due to slightly increased churn levels in the US. In short, this means that subscribers are canceling their subscriptions and are looking at other services instead.

Netflix has more competition than even this year with Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus having launched last year and other services like Quibi, Peacock and HBO Max scheduled this year. Thus, giving people a content sample in order to draw in more customers is one way of hooking them on the platform and making people spend more time and money.
