Netflix’s Masaba Masaba Review: The Gupta Duo Make a Powerful Team

Masaba Masaba is a drama series directed by Sonam Nair and is based on the lives of Masaba and Neena Gupta.

This slice-of-life series takes us on the journey of Masaba’s life right after she separates from her husband Vinay, and shows us her sorrows, happiness, problems and also how she deals with all these new challenges. Along with her, we get to see Neena Gupta, who is the constant driving force behind her daughter.

Masaba Masaba is such a delightful series. It’s uncomplicated, and perfect to watch if you just want something light-hearted and fun. There are moments which make you smile, and moments where you feel Masaba’s pain. It’s a very relatable show as well for single women who want to make a mark in this world – take for example, trying to rent a place alone. Ofcourse, we don’t understand the challenges that come with being a celebrity, but we definitely do understand the problems that come with being a woman.

The show highlights what it means to be a woman. Masaba Gupta is wonderful and a treat to watch on-screen. Her screen presence is easy and flawless, and there is not a moment where you don’t like watching her. Whether it be when she’s crying, or laughing and dancing – every moment she’s on screen is wonderful and performed with finesse.

Masaba Masaba also showcases the fashion and entertainment industry quite well. So there’s no dirth of back-bitching “friends”, air kisses, fashion and gossip. There are wonderful and bright clothes on display, but it’s a testament to what it takes to make these pieces. Masaba’s problematic lifestyle creates a barrier in this creative process, and the investors sitting on her back don’t help. However, just like her mother, she fights her way through.

Another big character her is Neena Gupta. She’s the both, strong, independent and beautiful support system that keeps Masaba going. It’s always a treat to watch Neena Gupta on screen – whatever I say won’t be justice to her talent. However, she’s a treat to watch, and extremely funny and feisty, but also supportive. She’s probably all of our mothers – forever telling us what to do and what not to do, but also being there when we screw up.

The other characters in the phone, whether it be Gia, Gehna or Vinay, everyone’s very positive and nice to watch. I would like to mention here that it’s honestly great to watch a divorce which doesn’t end up in ex-es trying to murder each other. It’s a welcome change, and a great watch. Gia as the supportive best friend is what we all want. She’s sweet and loving, but doesn’t shy away from calling Masaba out.

However, I do wish they had shown a little bit of Masaba’s backstory and how she grew up. It would’ve been nice to see how a fashion icon became who she is, and how life was for her growing up in Mumbai. However, I am hoping for a second season soon, and thus, I’m hopeful we’ll get to see some of that.

Summing up: Masaba Masaba

With a lot of heart, laughter, and a very feisty Neena Gupta, Masaba Masaba is an easy winner of a series to wind down to after a hard week. It’s fun, entertaining and packs the right amount of emotions. Add to that Masaba Gupta’s powerful performance, there are not many complaints that one can make. Other than the fact that there isn’t a second season already!

Masaba Masaba is streaming on Netflix.
