NBCUniversal’s Peacock Launches to Join the Streaming Wars

NBCUniversal picked a real potent time to release its new streaming service called Peacock. Considering how everyone is at home at the moment, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. Online streaming has gone up by manifolds and almost all the streamers in the market are enjoying huge demand. However, you can enjoy the service only if you are a Comcast customer.

Currently, Peacock is available for Comcast’s Xfinity X1 and Flex customers and will be available to others by the end of April. The company, furthermore, plans to make the low-cost streaming service available in a wider capacity, that is, to non-Comcast subscribers, on July 15. Comcast and NBCUniversal had previously planned to launch the service as a tie-in with the 2020 Summer Olympics. However, that is not possible anymore because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Like every other service at the moment, the pandemic has impacted the production of Peacock original shows. However, the company is confident that Peacock will be able to come out stronger by the end of it.

Comcast has, however, been able to keep up with its timeline, since launching the service in two phases – first on Comcast and then to the masses – was always on the cards.

Peacock is the latest streaming service to come out in the last six months – just after Apple TV+ and Disney+. Along with them, Quibi also came out last week.

Although not being able to launch Peacock with the Olympics was a major setback for the company, yet it still is a great time for anything that is available at home. The self-isolation has seen a sharp rise in viewership for Netflix and almost all other streaming services. The quarantine has definitely accelerated the adoption of the streaming service – which was already on the rise anyway. Thus, NBCUniversal and others’ plan to venture into the streaming sector has proved beneficial for them.

Peacock will come out with lots of exciting NBC-owned shows including Parks and Recreation, Law & Order and The Office (from next year). Apart from these, it will also feature movies from Universal Pictures studio including Jurassic Park, Despicable Me, Pyscho, The Birds, and Shrek. The entire library consists of 15,000 hours of TV and movies. It will also include early access to NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Late Night With Seth Meyers.

Now coming to pricing, Peacock will have three tiers when it launches in July for everyone. Peacock Free will be free but will include limited programming, an ad-supported completely free version for existing Comcast subscribers and a $5 per month version for everyone else. Apart from these, there will also be a $10 per month subscription, Peacock Premium, that is for everyone. The $5 per month version will be on-par with Hulu and is cheaper than most of its competitors. On the other hand, the premiere subscription is far cheaper than both Netflix ($12.99) and HBO Max ($14.99).

Along with the low pricing, NBCUniversal is home to an array of TV shows and movies. These two factors can seriously bring steep competition for others.
