Can Jared Leto’s Morbius Save Sony’s Spiderverse?

Jared Leto is really trying his best to recover from the disaster that was Suicide Squad. And he’s back with Sony portraying the role of Dr. Michael Morbius, a pseudo-vampire doctor.

The trailer introduces us to Dr. Morbius, a Nobel Prize-winning doctor, who has a rare blood disease that he must cure in order to stay alive and save others from the same fate. After trying various remedies, he experiments with bats (nothing to go wrong there, right?). That, however, does not go as planned, and he turns into a vampire-bat hybrid – complete with echolocation abilities and a thirst for blood. Very spooky!

Connecting with Spider-Man

Morbius, unlike Marvel Studios, is entirely Sony Pictures’s baby, like Tom Hardy’s Venom. The character, Morbius, first appeared in Marvel comics as a Spider-Man villain. Although the trailer makes it clear that it isn’t a movie from Marvel Studios, it does remind fans that the movie is a part of the Spider-Man universe. It features both Far From Home and Homecoming, along with Venom, to remind fans it’s part of a bigger narrative.

The movie also stars Matt Smith, Adria Arjona and Tyrese Gibson. And in case you missed it, Michael Keaton is there at the end of the trailer, possibly reprising his role Adrian Toomes/The Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming. But at this point, that’s speculation which has got fans super excited.

Can Jared Leto's Morbius Save Sony's Spiderverse?

Leto seems to have taken the job quite seriously – with his new and improved physique giving us a serious case of sleepless nights. However, it is surprising how much of the story the “teaser trailer” gave away in its runtime of 2:55. I like my trailers to keep me guessing about what lies in store and create a sense of thrill – but that’s just me.

Morbius comes to theatres on July 31, 2020.
