Long time collaborators of Sony, Housemarque will now operate under the company’s umbrella. The move comes after the release of the critically and commercially successful collaboration, Returnal.

In a statement yesterday, Head of Playstation Studios Herman Hulst revealed Housemarque to be the latest addition to the growing Playstation Family. The latest collaboration between both parties was the Third-person Shooter Rogue-like Returnal, released for the Playstation 5 exclusively.

Ilari Kuittinen, the co-founder and managing director of Housemarque, said about the acquisition-

“Today is a big day for Housemarque and it has been over 26 years in the making. Our strong partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment started with Super Stardust HD on PS3 and since then we have made arcade inspired games for all of the PlayStation platforms. With Returnal for PS5, our most recent release, our biggest foray into third-person action gaming solidified our voice and brand in the industry as delivering unique and quality player experiences.”

Housemarque is known to be the first-ever commercial game development studio based in Finland, alongside its collection of arcade-style games such as Super Stardust and Dead Nation. The studio’s first game on the Playstation consoles was Super Stardust HD on the Playstation 3.

    Returnal By Developer Housemarque

Notably, the acquisition of Housemarque was speculated upon heavily earlier this month, with their Brazilian collaborators on Returnal, Diorama Studios revealing that they were under Sony’s umbrella. In addition, a job listing by Sony also implied the existence of another merger, though it was not explicitly clear which Studio was being talked about.

Starting from 2010s Dead Nation, Housemarque had only released games for the Playstation series of games, so this news doesn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone. The excellent reviews that Returnal received on the Playstation 5 also seem to have cemented the studio’s brilliance in the eyes of Sony and the gaming world.
