For many gamers, The Last of Us capped the last generation of gaming in one epic post-apocalyptic journey. Ellie and Joel’s story touched many hearts and the game suddenly became the go-to PlayStation exclusive. Now, with the sequel well on its way, HBO has revealed that a new tv series based on the game is in development.

The series will be written by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann (The Last of Us franchise). The story was broken by The Hollywood Reporter first, detailing that Carolyn Strauss will also executive produce along with Evan Wells (President, Naughty Dog). The series will be co-produced by Sony Pictures. After all, Sony owns Naughty Dog.

“From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us. With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show.”

The first game, and its subsequent DLC, was critically applauded for breaking the boundaries of videogame storytelling. The game was also seen as breaking the technical limits of the PS3, being the last PlayStation exclusive that generation. Since then, Druckmann went on to co-write and direct Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which was also received praise for its innovative gameplay, cinematics and writing.
