The Batman Universe Gets New DC Series from HBO Max

DC fans, this might just be your year, because Warner Bros. has officially announced that HBO Max is going to come out with an original DC drama, set in the Gotham City police department. The series comes from The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves, along with Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter, The Batman producer Dylan Clark and Warner Bros Television.

The upcoming TV series is said to be set in Reeves’ The Batman feature film world and is expected to be written by Winter. The end product should create a new Batman universe across multiple platforms.

All that we know about the project is that it will work with The Batman’s focus on crime in Gotham City. This will hopefully give rise to more interesting and complex characters, which will thus extend that universe.

Speaking on the event, Reeves has said, “This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream.

Furthermore, Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max, has said, “We are so fortunate to have such great partners in Matt, Dylan, and Terry and unprecedented access to a wealth of IP from our partners at Warner Bros. and DC.”

The project will be Reeves’ first under his recently announced deal with the Warner Bros. Television Group. Additionally, The Batman, although pushed back due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, is expected to release in theatres in October 2021.

However, this isn’t the first time that Warner Bros. has tried to go deeper into the Batman universe. FOX’s Gotham was also similarly themed, and took place inside the Gotham Police Department. Although, it was set before Bruce Wayne donned the role of the iconic superhero.

The decision is definitely an exciting one, considering how almost all movie releases have been postponed due to the pandemic. It, however, remains to be seen as to what Warner Bros. and HBO Max decide to provide fans. Furthermore, it also remains to be seen whether Batman will be a part of the new series or not, unlike Gotham.
