There are growing reports on the internet that suggest that Samsung is planning to kill off its Galaxy Note range of smartphones in favour of its foldable lineup. Those are some big shoes to fill for the Galaxy Fold 3, Z Flip 2 or the other foldables the brand has in store for 2021. The latest leak surrounding those phones reveal substantial changes to the Fold 3 and the Z Flip 2, as well as, the launch of a more affordable Galaxy Fold Lite.

Massive upgrades are expected from the Galaxy Fold 3, also including the under-display camera and stylus support. The latter has been particularly rumoured for a long time since the Fold 3 is expected to replace the Galaxy Note lineup. Samsung has been having issues in implementing S-pen for the Fold series as the stylus can damage the screen. Samsung is countering this by increasing the thickness of the ultra-thin glass, from 30 micrometres to between 60 and 100 micrometres. This would make the screen less flexible, but it will be able to withstand the pressure from the S-pen.

Other specifications of the Galaxy Fold 3 reveal that it might have a 7-inch internal screen, a 4-inch external screen. For efficiency in the display, it is rumoured to have low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LPTO) thin-film transistors (TFT). Interestingly, the screen sizes of the Fold 3 are smaller than the screen sizes offered in Galaxy Fold 2, which has a 7.6-inch internal screen and 6.23-inch internal screen. This seems like an odd decision on Samsung’s part since the larger display on the Fold 2 was seen as an upgrade over the Galaxy Fold.

The Galaxy Fold Lite is a particularly smart move by Samsung. The high price tags of the foldables have prevented the wide-spread adoption of the phones. Although, I don’t expect the Fold Lite to be cheap in terms of current smartphone standards. The Galaxy Fold Lite is expected to feature the same screen sizes as the more-premium Fold 3, nothing else is currently known about it yet.

The Galaxy Z Flip 2, on the other hand, is rumoured to feature a 6.7-inch main display and a 3-inch cover display. If the rumours turn out to be true, the cover screen has increased its size from 1.1-inch on the original Z Flip.

If the Korean news site The Elec is to be believed, the Galaxy Fold Lite would be launching in the first quarter in 2021, followed by the Galaxy Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 2 in the third quarter of 2021. The Galaxy Fold Lite could be the phone that previously leaked on Samsung India’s support website.
