Electronic Arts has announced some major news regarding one of its highly anticipated in-development j, and the studio behind those games. EA’s executive president Patrick Söderlund revealed in a blog post on EA’s website about their decision of shutting down one of its oldest studios, Visceral Games. Visceral is best known for being behind the Dead Space series. The Star Wars game in development at Visceral will be overhauled and moved to its EA Worldwide Studios, led by EA Vancouver. The game was described as a linear, story-based adventure but based on Söderlund’s comments, they will be making a significant change to the title and it will be shifted towards a “broader experience”. So it can be expected that the final game that actually comes out could be completely different from how it was initially described and planned.
“Lastly,” he said, “while we had originally expected this game to launch late in our fiscal year 2019, we’re now looking at a new timeframe that we will announce in the future.
As far as the people working at Visceral are concerned, Söderlund stated that “we’re in the midst of shifting as many of the team as possible to other projects and teams at EA.”
This change also raised doubts over the future of Amy Hennig, who was a director and writer on the Uncharted series before leaving Naughty Dog and joining Visceral to work as creative director on the new Star Wars title. When EA was asked about this, a representative from EA stated that “We’re in discussions with Amy about her next move”.
Visceral was founded in 1998 and has been an integral part of EA for about two decades. It was initially called as Redwood Shores studios. It changed its name to Visceral in May 2009. The studio has produced a diverse collection of games.
Their first game was Future Cop: LAPD released in 1998 for PC, Mac and PlayStation. They developed the Tiger Woods golfing games. They also developed many licensed games, like The Simpsons, The Godfather, Lord of the Rings and James Bond. But Visceral will always be remembered for its Dead Space series which has sold over 2 million copies. The last Dead Space game was the Dead Space 3 released in 2013 after which they worked on the Battlefield series and released a Battlefield 3 DLC, End Game and Battlefield : Hardline in 2013 and 2015 respectively. The upcoming and unnamed Star Wars game was probably their last project till their shutdown yesterday.
