The year 2017 may not have been, oh so good for the world in general but hey if you are a gamer like me, then you know it was awesome. With games like Hellblade, Prey, Nier Automata, the industry is stronger than ever. For this year too, a number of highly anticipated titles are inbound, from well known names including Capcom’s “Monster Hunter” and BioWare’s “Anthem” to indie titles like “Sea of Thieves” and “A Way Out”. So we have come up with a list of some of the best upcoming games below.

Since hundreds of new games come out every year, especially if you consider Steam’s indies, it’s practically impossible to cover all of them. So if you think that we’ve left out a notable game that everyone needs to know about, be sure to let us know. Let the games begin!

    Best Upcoming Games of 2018

    State of Decay 2

    Platform: PC, Xbox One

    Release Date: 22nd May 2018

A survival game being developed by Undead Studios and to be published by Microsoft studios for the DirectX based platforms, State of Decay 2 is slated for release on 22nd May 2018. This is a Walking Dead like co-op shooter where players will need to work together to survive. Supplies will be precious little, and in addition to the bloodthirsty zombies, there will be plenty of other things to do, like maybe backstabbing your teammates. If one of you gets bitten it’ll be upto your friends to cure you (or shoot you in the head and take all your stuff). This is probably one of the best upcoming games for the Microsoft Xbox consoles.

    Detroit: Become Human

    Platform: PS4

    Release Date: 25th May 2018

This game will be set in future Detroit and gives me the Nier Automata vibes, except it’ll be narrated in a modern day scenario. Detroit: Become Human follows sentient Androids, Kara, Markus and Connor, each of whom have their own distinct loyalties and objectives. This will be a choice based, story-driven Sony exclusive. With rather advanced graphics tech like simulated rain for Sony’s Oh-not-so-advanced consoles, it looks pretty sweet. This will be one those games you can boast to, to your non-PS4 owning pals. This is one (of many) of the best upcoming games for the PS4 in the near future.

    Vampyr

    Platform: PC, Xbox and PS4

    Release Date: 5th June 2018

Vampyr is being developed by Dontnod Entertainment, the studio responsible for Life is Strange. Granted this is a very different genre and fans will be hoping for Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines level of goodness, still we believe the team has more than enough potential to pull this off. Set in Victorian London, Vampyr will give the players the option to play as a pious doctor helping the poor people of London or as a monster preying on the unwary souls lurking in the dark. Rest assured there is lot to hope for here, with teleporting powers, monster hunters and mysteries.

    Crackdown 3

    Platform: PC, Xbox One

    Release Date: Spring 2018

Imagine Saints Row, except you are a cop. Yes that is what Crackdown 3 will be like. The co-op lets you team up and let loose all kinds of mayhem with your cop-powers to “keep the peace” in the city. Jumpjets, big guns and RPGs, all that you need to keep the criminals in check. As you might as already heard, Terry Crews has been confirmed to be voicing one of the characters.

    Red Dead Redemption 2

    Platforms: PS4, Xbox One
    Release date: 26th October 2018

Red Dead Redemption 2 needs no introduction. There has been a lot of hype surrounding this game, and it’s one of Rockstar Games’ primary franchises. RDR2 is a prequel to the original Red Dead Redemption. It’s GTA, set in a cow-boyish setting, with… cowboys? The player character is Arthur Morgan, who works for longtime villain Dutch van der Linde. For a lot of gamers, RDR2 is by far the most anticipated game of 2018.

    Soul Calibur 6

    Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
    Release date: 2018

Soul Calibur is the king of of all fighting games. Bandai Namco has announced that Geralt of Rivia from Witcher 3 and Noctis from Final Fantasy XV will be the newest characters joining the already diverse caste of Soul Calibur 6. This year will be the long running series’ 20th anniversary and Namco will be looking to blend the previous Calibur games to create the best one yet. Just like Final Fantasy XV, the latest Soul Calibur game is being tailored for both fans and new-comers.

    Darksiders 3

    Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
    Release date: 2018

Darksiders 3 is the sequel to Darksiders 2 and an upcoming game by THQ Nordic. When Darksiders 3 was announced, the most prominent detail was, that in a first, the player character will be a female horseman, named Fury. Fury is said to be the sister of War and one of the four “Horsemen of the Apocalypse”. I’ve never been one of the biggest fans of Darksiders but this has piqued my interest. As per THQ, Fury is a mage and the most unpredictable and enigmatic of the Four Horsemen, who relies on whips and magic in combat.

    Shadow of the Tomb Raider

    Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
    Release date: 14th September 2018

Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be the concluding game in the rebooted Lara Croft saga. The official reveal event is just a few days away on 27th April, but as of now, apart from a few screenshots nothing solid is known about this upcoming game.

    Call of Cthulhu

    Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
    Release date: 2018

If you like dark, creepy, FPS games, then you no doubt have played this classic. This new Call of Cthulhu will take the same route as the original CoC, but apparently brawn will be traded off for brains, meaning you can’t hit or blow up everything, and will have to do quite a bit of thinking. This game is expected to be one of those horror game you absolutely have to try, and as such crawls its way to our list of best upcoming games.

    Code Vein

    Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
    Release date: 2018

Code Vein is Dark Souls with anime-ish art-styles and characters. Full of vampires and  supernatural beings, this upcoming game by Bandai Namco is a depiction of a doomsday modern metropolitan like many other Japanese media. The player character will be a bloodsucking vampire of sorts, accompanied by an AI controlled partner. Get ready for a Bandai Namco RPG with big blades and ugly enemies with even bulkier armor.

    Shenmue III

    Platforms: PS4, PC
    Release date: 2018

Shenmue is being made by the series creator Yu Suzuki, and follows teenage martial artist Ryo Hazuki. Taking place in 1980s China, Shenmue follows the player character Ryo as tries to hunt down his father’s killer. Yeah I know, the plot sounds really cliched, but it still has a dedicated fan-base as proved by the successful crowdfunding, despite the dismal prequel. Sony and Shibuya Productions are backing this project, and it will built atop the Unreal engine.

    Metro Exodus

    Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
    Release date: 2018

Metro Exodus is the sequel to the the first two Metro games, and the player will follow same ol’ Artyom. It picks off right where Metro: Last Light ended (the good ending), and Artyom’s new wife, Anna is also expected to return from the old cast. Metro Exodus has the player survive aggressive mutated creatures, angry Russians and radio-active wastes. The game will have a dynamic weather system, a day-night cycle, and environments that change along with the seasons. Artyom’s mission this time around is to get on a locomotive known as the “Aurora” and head east in search of a better life. He will also have a son, so expect a more mature theme. Lastly, most of the game will be played above surface in open environments, unlike the older two that were set underground.

    We Happy Few

    Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Release date: 2018 (already avail in early access)

This one is a real interesting pick. We Happy Few will be set in a dystopian, retro-futuristic London, where ironically no one is happy. They sure do seem happy though, and very very dependent on drugs I like to call “happy pills”. These happy pills make them hysterical and immoral. The player character is a downer, who stops using these pills, and must escape the city. In addition to being on our best upcoming games list, this one will probably be one of the most acclaimed games of recent times, given the ingenious concept.

Survival in the game involves blending in with the surroundings and people, while exploring to acquire weapons and consumables, along with completing quests. With time, the player will slowly become tired, hungry and thirsty, and receive a status menu screen, and will need to rest, eat or drink to get back to normal. Eating contaminated food can also result in a negative status, such as food poisoning. This is another game I’m really looking forward to. There you have it, our list of the best upcoming games. Do let us know if you think we left something out.
