Best Graphics Cards for Gaming in 2019: The Ultimate GPU Buying Guide

With the coming of AMD’s Navi lineup, NVIDIA’s monopoly in the graphics card market has come to an end (at least for the most part). Other than the top-end RTX 2080 Ti, the entire Turing lineup is now priced quite aggressively. There are multiple options available in the midrange and upper midrange space which can make it quite confusing to decide which graphics card to buy. In this post, we list the best NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards for gaming at 1080p, 1440p and 4K. Let’s get to it!

Best Graphics Cards for Gaming @ 1080p (FHD)

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 6GB

    • Price: Rs 16,328 (Link)

At the moment, the GeForce GTX 1660 is the best graphics card for 1080p gaming, allowing solid 60FPS in most titles without any compromise. Build atop the Turing architecture, this GPU was introduced to make AMD’s RX 580 obsolete by offering much better performance while costing less. It also has a lower power draw and runs relatively cooler. You can expect consistent 60+ FPS in most titles at 1080p with the GTX 1660.

The GeForce GTX 1660 Super offers 1660 Ti levels of performance at near-1660 prices. It’s a solid GPU for 1080p 120 FPS or 1440p 60 FPS gaming. You’re essentially getting a GTX 1070 (which cost 40K) level card for less than Rs. 20K. We’ve certainly come a long way.

    NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060

    • Price: Rs. 25,799 (Link)
    • Recommended Power Supply: 500W
    GPUTU106
    Process12nm
    CUDA Cores1920
    Boost Clock1755 MHz
    Max Board Power160W
    Power Connectors8+8 pin
    Memory6GB GDDR6
    Memory Width192-bit
    Memory Speed14 Gbps
    InterfacePCI-E 3.0
    Dimensions315*147*52 (mm)

The GeForce RTX 2060 is the only 20 series card that wasn’t discontinued after the coming of the Supers. Instead, it got a hefty price cut to 26K while the AMD Navi cards and the Supers are selling at its original price point. This makes it quite viable for 1440 gaming. You can expect consistent 60 FPS across a wide range of titles at the ultra quality preset. At 1080p, you will easily cross the 120 FPS mark in Battle Royale games like PUBG, given you have a capable CPU.

    AMD Radeon RX 5700 8GB

    • Price: Rs. 29,499 (Link)
    • Recommended Power Supply: 550W
    GPUNavi 10
    Process7nm
    Stream Processors2304
    Boost Clock1725 MHz
    Max Board Power187W
    Power Connectors8+6 pin
    Memory8GB GDDR6
    Memory Width256-bit
    Memory Speed14 Gbps
    InterfacePCI-E 4.0
    Dimensions254 x 135 x 46.5 (mm)

If you’re alright with skipping the first wave of ray-traced games, and instead want a 1440p capable graphics card that can shell out 60+FPS without much trouble, then the Radeon RX 5700 is just for you. Priced at just Rs. 29,499, it consistently beats the GeForce RTX 2060 Super while also being cheaper. Furthermore, it can be overclocked to perform more or less on par with the RTX 2070 and the RX 5700 XT, although that’ll need a water block or custom cooling solution.

Best Graphics Cards for Gaming @ 2160p (4K)

    NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super

    • Price: Rs. 39,999 (Link)
    • Recommended Power Supply: 650W
    GPUTU104
    Process12nm
    CUDA Cores2560
    Boost Clock1785 MHz
    Max Board Power215W
    Power Connectors8+6 pin
    Memory8GB GDDR6
    Memory Width256-bit
    Memory Speed14 Gbps
    InterfacePCI-E 3.0
    Dimensions268*113 (mm)

There aren’t a lot of options in the ultra-enthusiast section of the graphics card market. The RTX 2080 Ti costs an insane $999 (1 lac) and while it is most suited for 4K, the price makes it hard to recommend. The RTX 2080 Super, on the other hand, is just an RTX 2080 on steroids. So, we opt for the 2070 Super. The Inno3D model is on a special discount selling for less than 40K for the first time ever, so grab it by the p***y.

    NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti

    • Price: Rs 84,999 (Link)
    • Recommended Power supply: 650W

In case you just got a promotion at work or won a gold medal for doing nothing, and of course, are willing to shell out almost 1 lac on just the GPU, then the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti qualifies as a gaming graphics card. And with a lot of money comes… slightly more performance. The Turing RTX flagship is the only GPU in the market able to push 4K 60+FPS in almost title without breaking a sweat. If not for that price tag, we’d have put it on the top of this list. There are whispers of a Radeon Navi 12 GPU on the internet said to perform on the same level as the Ti, but as of now, that’s what they are. Unless AMD announces it or we don’t see a benchmark or a significant leak, it’d be fair to say it’s merely a pipe-dream.
