A Suitable Boy Episode 2 Review:
We start off from where we left off. Things come to a head in A Suitable Boy episode 2, as secrets are revealed. Lata’s mother and Maan’s father both learn of their children’s affairs, and both try to put an end to it. While Lata is taken to Calcutta in hopes of finding a good match, Maan is asked to leave home as his indiscretions are creating problems for his father in his party.
However, both the love-struck kids cannot forget their lovers, and while Lata yearns for Kabir, who refuses to run away with her, Maan takes up Saeeda Bai’s offer to leave home and learn Urdu.
A Suitable Boy episode 2, again, excellently portrays the socio-economic and political turmoil that hasn’t really gone away in present-day India. The rich taking away the poor’s hard-earned money, the taboo behind inter-religious marriage, the blatant sexism – it’s all, it seems, a part and parcel of growing up in this country.
Mahesh, Maan’s father, tries his level best to bring about a reform in the country, but is met with greedy zamindars who would do anything in their power to keep the status quo in check. Inter-religious marriage also takes a front seat, with everyone losing their minds the moment they realise that Kabir is, infact, a Muslim. Although it does not create conflict between the couple at first, it does, ultimately, cause a rift in their relationship.
As for the sexism, I don’t think I need to define how that plays out in India, but Kulbhushan Kharbanda plays a role here as Lata’s grandfather. Vijay Varma also makes an appearance as Rasheed, Maan’s Urdu teacher.
While these things do remind of the grim realities of India, there’s also some great sibling bonding that reminds us of the better things in life. Lata’s bond with Savita or with Varun are heart-warming.
New characters are introduced in A Suitable Boy episode 2, including Meenakshi’s brother Amit, Lata’s prospective lover. We also see a glimpse of Haresh Khanna, who, it seems, falls in love with Lata at first sight. There’s also Randeep Hooda being absolutely dashing, as per usual.
Episode 2 is delightfully entertaining, with much dancing and Maan and Saeeda’s love story. However, I do have to ask whether it was feasible in post-independence India for lovers to kiss so openly. If yes, then I’d say those were better times, but I have my doubts.
Snippets for the next episode promises more love for Lata, as Amit and Haresh both get into the picture and pine for her affection. On the other hand, Maan seems to grow up as he starts living in Rasheed’s village. We see Ranvir Shorey come into frame, as Maan takes up responsibility for the villagers. And it also seems like something bad will take place during a religious festival. We can only wait and watch.
