World of Warcraft, one of the most popular MMOs recently got an update that drastically improves the CPU utilization and in turn the performance of the game on AMD Ryzen based systems. WoW has always suffered from poor multi-threaded performance and it was only after the release of the last expansion pack that CPUs with more than 4 threads were properly leveraged.
The latest patch (8.1) dubbed as Tides of Vengeance improves the performance of Ryzen processors using the DX12 API. At 1080p, the gains should be more apparent with AMD claiming performance gains of up to 35%. As per AMD’s own benchmarks, the pre-patch frame rates were 43.2 and 42.7 FPS for the Ryzen 5 2500X, and Ryzen 7 2700X, respectively. After the patch, the same CPUs garnered an average FPS of up to 58.1 fps, and 58.2 fps, respectively.

According to AMD, this improvement is most apparent in the two faction city hubs, where the performance usually takes a big hit due to excessive player activity. So much so that these gains are also quite noticeable at higher resolutions. At 4K using a Ryzen 7 2700X, players are reporting performance boosts of up to 25% in the major CPU intensive areas of the game.
