Ever since the Vega VII was announced, we’ve been hearing a lot about AMD’s next GPU architecture or Navi. Although no concrete details have surfaced, both the AMD CEO, Dr. Lisa Su as well as the CTO, Mark Papermaster have confirmed that Navi is expected to launch this year itself. That is also in-line with AMD’s graphics roadmap which puts the release of Navi 7nm GPUs between 7nm Vega and an unannounced 7nm “next-gen” architecture. The latter is supposed to debut in 2020 which the 7nm Vega was just announced a while ago.
However, if a report published by Cowcotland is to be believed, then the release of the 7nm Navi GPUs has been pushed to the last quarter of 2019. As per the German outlet, Navi will be announced in Q3 2019 and will hit retail shelves in October (2019). The reason behind the delay has been attributed to the 7nm die shortage which is also affecting the stocks of the newly announced Vega VII GPUs.
The Navi 20 GPU is also speculated to power both Sony and Microsoft’s next-gen consoles, so it is also possible that the PC release has been pushed to meet the console requirement.
As already mentioned, Navi will most likely target the mid-range market and the aging Polaris lineup. At the moment, AMD’s budget offerings rely on the RX 570, 580 and the 590 (which is basically a 580 on steroids). Here’s what the bigwigs at AMD have already said about Navi and their plans for the GPU market:
