Netflix Just Cancelled Altered Carbon After Two Seasons

There’s bad news for all Altered Carbon fans – Netflix just cancelled the two-season-old show on the streaming platform. The first season of the show had premiered on Netflix on February 2018, while the second season came out exactly a year later.

Joel Kinnaman and Anthony Mackie starred in this futuristic sci-fi series, which shows how the human mind has now become digitized and allows people to transfer the soul from one body to another body.

Netflix had apparently decided to cancel Altered Carbon in the month of April itself. The show was reportedly cancelled due to its huge, and ever-increasing, budget. Although a lot of shows, which were supposed to get additional seasons, were cancelled due to COVID, the situation of Altered Carbon isn’t quite the same.

Altered Carbon

Alison Schapker, who happens to be the showrunner of Altered Carbon, has confirmed the news through a tweet that she posted on her profile.

There has not been any statement from Netflix as to why they have decided to not renew the show for the third season. However, reports from Deadline suggest that the reason could possibly be due to Netflix’s standard viewership vs. cost renewal review process, according to which running the show was not proving to be a good idea. Series like Society and I Am Not OK With This have been cancelled for their second seasons purely due to reasons related to the ongoing pandemic.

Altered Carbon is, in fact, one of Netflix’s most expensive shows. According to a few sources, one Altered Carbon episode costs around $7 million, which amounts to about Rs. 52 crores. Joel Kinnaman has also been earlier heard saying that one episode of Altered Carbon has a budget higher than the first three seasons of Game of Thrones combined.

Altered Carbon

This sci-fi series was by Laeta Kalogridis and is based on the novel by Richard K. Morgan with the same title.

Despite Altered Carbon being such a humongous project with a promising cast, the show did not garner as much popularity or praise that it was expected to. The first season of Altered Carbon has gained more popularity than the second season which had very less impact on the show watchers. Other sci-fi series with smaller budgets have done better at creating an impact in terms of commercial popularity.
