Rumors about the potential 3rd Gen, 32-core “budget” Threadripper processor based on the 7nm Zen 2 architecture are heating up again. An AMD “Sharkstooth” processor was recently spotted on Geekbench. This part was shown as having 32 cores and 64 threads. We were also treated to further information about the part from Geekbench:

The base clock is rather low at 2.20 GHz, but the processor boosts to a respectable 4.17 GHz. 4.2 GHz boost is a bit on the low end for 3rd gen Ryzen, but we see two potential reasons behind this. For starters, this is likely an engineering unit we’re looking at and these clocks might not represent the final clocks the card ships at. Secondly, running such a gigantic processor at high clockspeeds can really heat things up. The 2nd Gen Threadripper 2990WX is also a 32-core part and it has a TDP of 250W. It just doesn’t make sense to run it at significantly higher clocks than this.

The Geekbench scores themselves are in line with what we’d expect from a third-gen Threadripper part. We’re looking at a single-core score of 5523. And a positively eye-watering multicore score of 68,576.

Just who is this processor for? The 2nd Gen Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX launched at $1,799 and we expect third-gen Threadripper to be in the same price bracket. At these prices, third-gen Threadripper is targeted squarely towards professional designers and editors. 32 physical cores don’t make a difference in gaming: today’s games struggle to utilize more than 6 physical cores. Moreover, the lower boost clock would negatively impact single-threaded performance.

All in all though when (and/or if) this part comes out, we expect that it’ll give solid competition to Intel’s Xeon HEDT processors and force team blue to cede home turf–the server market.
